A publication for writers who take their craft seriously.
The Pembrooke Journal publishes fiction, essays, craft commentary, and professional articles from writers at every stage of their career. We are not chasing trends. We are not filling a quota. We are looking for work that is honest, precise, and worth reading twice.
Submissions are open on a rolling basis. There is no deadline. There is no gatekeeping.
What We Publish
The Pembrooke Journal accepts a wide range of written work, including:
Fiction - Short stories, flash fiction, and excerpts from longer works across all genres. We have a particular appreciation for work that takes risks.
Essays - Personal essays, literary criticism, cultural commentary. If you have something to say and you know how to say it, we want to read it.
Craft Articles - Writing advice, editorial insight, process pieces. Work that helps other writers get better.
Professional & Industry Articles - Publishing industry commentary, author business strategy, marketing, indie publishing, and beyond. If it's relevant to the working writer, it belongs here.
No strict word count. Write what the piece requires.
Submission Guidelines
Who can submit: Anyone. Published or unpublished. Debut or veteran.
Simultaneous submissions: Accepted. If your work is accepted elsewhere, please notify us promptly so we can remove it from consideration.
Previously published work: Please query before submitting previously published pieces.
Format: Submit your work as a Google Doc link or a .docx attachment. Standard manuscript format preferred but not required.
Response time: We aim to respond within 4-6 weeks. All submissions receive a personal response - no form letters.
Compensation: The Pembrooke Journal is currently a contributor credit publication. Accepted work will be published under your byline with a contributor bio, shared across Pembrooke Publications' platform and social channels.
